Learning foreign language is viewed as complex task, especially for deaf or hard of hearing
students. To achieve this, teachers should use various methods in order to enhance their
learning. Therefore, learning English ass foreign language to hearing impaired students need
to implement innovative method such as Total Physical Response. Total Physical Response is
one of the most workable methods in teaching deaf students. Recent studies in learning
English also assert that Total Physical Response effects in promoting learning and the
learning process. The present study aims at investigating teaching how useful the Total
Physical Response method is in teaching English to fifth year hearing-impaired students at
Bachir Boutaba School of Hearing- Impaired Children, Constantine. In order to check this
correlation, we have hypothesis that implementing Total Physical Response would results in
improving learning English to deaf or hard of hearing students. To verify the validity of this
hypothesis, we have conducted a pilot study, through which we have tested the student’s
understanding of the questions and the relevance of their answers to our study. After, we have
carried out the main investigation that is, in turn, divided in two kinds of questionnaire, the
students’ questionnaire and the teachers’ questionnaire. The first one is composed of fourteen
questions and administered to ten 5th year students at Bachir Boutaba School of hearingimpaired
children, Constantine. The second questionnaire consists of thirteen questions given
to ten teachers among twenty teachers at the same school during academic year 2014-2 015.
The discussion of the results has shown that implementing Total Physical Response enhance
learning English to 5th year hearing impaired students |
