combination, and this might lead them to avoid this important language aspect which might
influence the quality of the language they produce. This research is a corpus analysis performed
on 60 essays written by second year students who were already initiated to phrasal verbs to
check two hypotheses: first, that students underuse phrasal verbs, which makes their language
not look native like, and second, that their L1 (Arabic) may have a certain influence that could
justify the misuse of phrasal verbs. The findings confirm the first hypothesis, but not the second.
It was found out that the participants underused phrasal verbs and that they used more often the
ones which have direct equivalents in Arabic. The data, however, did not allow for drawing any

It shows the effective
role of the comma and the semicolon in conveying the exact meaning, and thus avoids
ambiguity. Second year students seem to have difficulties using these two punctuation marks.
On this it was hypothesized that if students know more about the rules of the comma and the
semicolon, they will be able to use them appropriately. To check the hypothesis, an
investigation on how to build second year students’ awareness towards the use of the comma
and the semicolon was conducted. Two tools of research that have been used are two
questionnaires, one addressed to teachers and the other to students plus a test. The results
obtained, with a sample of twenty students, revealed that indeed when students know the rules
of punctuation, especially the comma and the semicolon, they can then use them appropriately
in any context without distorting the meaning. The analysis of the data has allowed to say that

Particularly, the study seeks to see if there is any relationship between EFL students' ability to give a synonym or an acceptable definition of English polysemous phrasal verbs in English and their ability to write their correct equivalents in Arabic. To investigate this relationship, a test has been given to a sample of 30 Algerian, third-year students of Applied Language studies in the Department of English at Mentouri University, Constantine. The test is one exercise which consists of twenty five sentences; each five sentences include the same phrasal verb. The participants are required to do the exercise in two parts: in part one, the participants were asked to define the phrasal verbs or give their synonyms in English, and then in part two, they were asked to translate them into Arabic. The results show, first, that the two variables mentioned above do correlate, and second that the majority of students are unable to define the suggested phrasal verbs and to infer their exact Arabic equivalents unless the sentences in which these verbs appear provide clear hints at the verbs' meanings. The hypothesis for this study is that if students are able to make correct predictions about the content of a certain text; they are also able to answer comprehension questions about it. This research studies the case of first-year LMD students at the University of Constantine. A test, made up of a reading selection of three parts and seven comprehension questions, was administered to seventy six students who participated in the study. The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group in which the participants made explicit predictions about the content of the selection before and while reading, and a control group in which the participants did not make any explicit predictions. The correlation coefficient of the prediction and the comprehension scores got by the experimental group was calculated, and the scores of comprehension got by the two groups were compared to see how prediction affects comprehension.
