To this end, a questionnaire has been designed to collect data about the students’ conception of reading in general, and reading with prediction in i particular. In addition, an exercise in actual reading prediction has been proposed to further investigate the students’ use of prediction in reading. i Results of both the questionnaire and the exercise reveal that advanced learners of English use prediction more successfully than less advanced learners. Moreover, the investigation shows that four main factors interfere in the use of prediction as a reading strategy: the students’ linguistic knowledge of English, their schemata or background knowledge of the topic, their purpose for reading a particular selection, and their motivation in reading.
