In technology streams, for instance, syllabuses are designed to enable pupils to use this language for science and technology and to get access to scientific documentation. To measure the extent to which these objectives are achieved, we refer to the types of testing and assessment in the Baccalaureate examination. The problem is that although these pupils study
at the same schools, use the same manuals and receive instruction from almost the same teachers, their scores in seven Baccalaureate sessions (2001-2006) rank them at the bottom of the list lagging far behind all the other specialties in secondary schools. The main purpose of
this study is to diagnose the causes responsible for technology pupils' underachievement in English and to propose a set of recommendations intended to improve the process of English language testing in the Baccalaureate examination. Four hypotheses have been formulated to investigate the relationship between the pupils' low achievement and the scoring inconsistencies in the Baccalaureate English rating centers: the test construct underrepresentation, content irrelevance and the slim scope of sampling from the instructional domain. The hypotheses have been tested by the descriptive method instruments such the
questionnaire, the interview and the documentary sources. The questionnaire was administered to a whole population of 63 examiners of the BAC English tests in Eloued Rating Center, the interview was conducted with the chief examiner of the same center and
the documentary sources such as the pupils' scores, the Baccalaureate English Examination copies and the instructional syllabus were also supplemented. The results of the study have revealed that the BAC English test in technology streams failed to measure the construct that it was supposed to measure. These findings challenged the validity of the interpretations provided for these pupils' scores which implied that they have low level of English language
ability; as well as the purposes for which the scores have been used which prevented most of these pupils from joining higher education institutions or English language departments.Diplôme : Doctorat en sciences En ligne : ../theses/anglais/NAO1405.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10262 An evaluation of English language testing in the baccalaureate examination : The case of the tests administered to technology streams from 2001 to 2006 [texte imprimé] / Mohammed Naoua, Auteur ; Ahmed Moumene, Directeur de thèse . - [s.d.] . - 354 f. ; 30 cm.

Langue AnglaiseIndex. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : Students’ first language has always a role to play in second language acquisition. In writing, the first language influence is manifested at different levels beginning with vocabulary, grammar and mechanics and ending up with discourse organization and rhetorical devices. The present research work aims to investigate the issue of rhetorical transfer as reflected in the writing of second-year students at the Department of Letters and English, University of Constantine 1. It carries out a contrastive rhetoric analysis of students’ Arabic and English expository compositions for the sake of identifying their stylistic deviations and enhancing their academic writing in the target language. Therefore, it is hypothesized that differences between Arabic and English have a negative impact on students’ rhetorical writing in English and that awareness-raising about discourse differences will enhance students’ writing quality. Three main research tools have been used to test out the hypotheses: a students’ questionnaire, a comparative analysis of Arabic and English compositions, and a quasi-experimental research design. The results corroborate the research hypotheses in a sense that rhetorical differences between the first language and the target language lead to difficulties and that students’ lack of awareness about these differences results in first language negative transfer and target language rhetorical deviation at the levels of connectivity, repetition, collectiveness and transculturality. As long as the
experimental group participants recorded a significant statistical progress as measured through the student t-test, it could be concluded that Arabic exerts an apparent negative influence on shaping students’ thoughts and that awarenessraising about contrastive rhetoric represents an effective means to boost up their writing performance. Eventually, since this conundrum usually yields some communication breakdowns, teachers should introduce their students to different aspects of rhetoric in order to improve their general intercultural communicative competence.

Langue AnglaiseTags : Developping the writing skill Increasing learners' awareness University of Constantine Writing process Second year students Index. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : Writing in a foreign language is one of the most challenging and complex tasks for language learners. It is a difficult skill that requires considerable effort and practice on the learners’ part to reach an acceptable level of writing. Due to the complexity of this skill, many students find it very difficult to produce an adequate piece of writing. In this research work, we aim to make our students aware about the fact that the development of the writing skill involves dealing with writing as a process that entails different stages and not as a product of accurate use of grammar and vocabulary. Students should be made aware of the writing process through the intensive practice of writing which leads to the effective use of the writing techniques that allow them to decide about what to write, how to write, and how to evaluate what they write. Thus, making students aware of the different processes of writing will help them to overcome the difficulties they face when they write and to produce well written texts.
It is by the means of two questionnaires devised to both teachers and students from the Department of Languages at Mentouri University-Constantine that we investigated our hypothesis. The findings gathered in this study confirmed the set hypothesis in that the problems students face in writing can be avoided, and effective production can be achieved if they are made aware of the importance of the writing process and the stages it entails.Diplôme : Magistère En ligne : ../theses/anglais/HAM1132.pdf Permalink : index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4802 Developping the writing skill through increasing learners' awareness of the writing process : The case of second year students-university of Constantine [texte imprimé] / Mokhtar Hamadouche ; Univ. de Constantine, Éditeur scientifique ; Ahmed Moumene, Directeur de thèse . - 2010 . - 86 f. ; 30 cm.
