It was for objective to study (or to investigate) the photocatalytic activity of a local clay rich in iron oxide for the degradation of certain kind of organic compounds, in particular dyes and pesticides.
The first part of this work has been devoted to the acquisition of some local clay and the obtaining of their characteristic properties by a few characterization methods such as: thermal analysis (ATD and ATG), scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence.
The adsorption kinetics of two pollutants showed that the equilibrium is reached practically in 30 minutes. The adsorption rate was rapid at the first 15 minutes of the process and then becomes slow for the rest of stirring time to reach equilibrium after 30 minutes.
The photo-degradation process of heterogeneous photo-Fenton type (clay/pollutant/oxalic acid/UV system) was studied by monitoring the change in the concentration of organic pollutants using the UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis technique as a function of irradiation time.
The degradation was studied by investigating the effect of different operational parameters such as: the initial pH, the concentration of the catalyst and the concentration of organic materials.
The results indicated that the photodegradation rate of two pollutants was clearly increased in the presence of clay compared with the direct photolysis. The introduction of oxalic acid considerably improved the photocatalytic process (about 90% removal). The optimal conditions for a better degradation were obtained for: [clay] = 1 g/L and acidic pH (between 3 and 4) in the presence of [oxalic acid] = 10-2 M.
The exposition of the photocatalytic system to sunlight causes the disappearance the organic pollutant in a significant way. This fact is very promising and highlighting the possibility of using sunlight, a source of renewable and free energy as an alternative to UV radiations for the elimination of organic pollutants from the aquatic environment.

and physico-chemical methods in aqueous medium and on solid supports. Two benzothiazole
derivatives, 2-mercaptobenzothiazol (MBT) and methabenzthiazuron (MBTU) has been
studied.
In a first step the photochemical behaviour of pollutants on clay surface has been
studied. Two commercial clays (Montmorillonite and Kaolinite) and three natural clays (A, B
and C) of El-golea (Ghardaia-Algeria) region were selected for this study. Along the study of
pollutants photodegradation in suspension (heterogenic phase) no evident photoinductive
effect has been observed, but mainly adsorption phenomena. Montmorillonite showed a
stronger capacity of adsorption in the case of MBTU (adsorbed amount » 9mg.g-1) over other
clays with 1mg.g-1. Moreover, the adsorbed amount of MBT was less then 1mg.g-1 with all
clays. The photodegradation products were produced in lower concentration but revealed to
be similar to those observed by direct photolysis thus confirming the involvement of screen
effect.
The results on dried phase showed that clay have a great efficiency in the elimination
of pollutants. The disappearance rate of MBT up to 95% after 100 h of irradiation on
Kaolinite and clay A while the complete elimination is reached after the same irradiation time
on clay B. Montmorillonite with MBTU presented a higher efficiency compared to other clays
(72% of disappearance).
In the second step the photochemical degradation of benzothiazole derivatives, 2-
mercaptobenzothiazol (MBT, 0,1mM) and methabezthiazuron (MBTU, 0,1mM) has been
studied in aqueous solution in the presence of decatungstate anion DTA (W10O32
-4 , 0,5g/l)
used as photocatalyst under irradiation at 365nm.
The total mineralization of MBT and MBTU has been obtained in the presence of
DTA after 100 and 170 h of irradiation respectively. This result attests the possibility of the
potential application of DTA in the elimination of different organic pollutants, particularly
benzothiazole derivatives.

The incapability of conventional methods to remove effectively biorecalcitrant and toxic pollutants, have promoted the research of more efficient and ecologically friendly water treatment technologies.
In the same aspect, this thesis is a small contribution to the development of a new advanced oxidation process considered as promising and clean method for the destruction of water pollutants. In this process we investigated the efficiency of untreated local natural clay rich in iron oxides as a cost-free photocatalyst for the
degradation of a persistent organic pollutant under simulated sunlight irradiation. The targeted pollutant was: 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). The study showed that:
Firstly, the adsorption capacity, kinetics and isotherms models were examined in thedark.
Secondly, experiments of degradation by heterogeneous Fenton process under variousoperational parameters were investigated. And then, we focused our research on the photodegradation of MBT by heterogeneous photo-Fenton process using the same natural clay powder (NCP) as photocatalyst and under simulated sunlight irradiation. Experiments were conducted at natural pH with a bath reactor equipped with a medium-pressure Hg lamp emitting mainly at 366 nm. The natural clay was crushed into small homogeneous particles (powder) and then characterized by SEM-EDS, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, XRF and XRD analysis. The specific BET surface area measured for the clay was 30.22 m²·g-1.
Our main results indicated that, the photodegradation of MBT follows first order (for direct photolysis) or pseudo-first order kinetics (for photocatalysis) Direct photolysis of MBT showed a negligible effect both upon 254 and 365 nm irradiation, while 42.5% and 62% of MBT was eliminated in 3 h under 310 nm irradiation in the presence of H2O2, and under sunlight irradiation (using NCP), respectively. Kinetic runs carried out with 5,0.10-5M MBT and 0.5g·L-1clay showed higher MBT conversion and photodegradation rate at basic pH and in oxygenated
media.
The photodegradation of MBT is mainly attributed to reaction with HO, leading to different intermediates that have been identified by HPLC-MS. A reaction mechanism is proposed at the end of our thesis. The highest TOC removals were obtained using UVA at low pHs, in the absence of O2 with 68% and 65% TOC removal respectively.
The presence of oxalic acid and H2O2 enhanced significantly MBT photodegradation.
Finally, the obtained results support the use of natural clay rich in iron oxides as a free, clean and efficient photocatalysts for water pollutants abatement.
