Résumé : |
Before dealing in details with the concept of rhetorical question, let us clarify what we mean by the rhetoric.
The term “rhetoric” can be defined in various ways; the most common definition is that it is the art of persuasive or effective speech or writing, it’s the artificial eloquence or sophistry; exaggerated oratory concerning style or effect.
It is essential to take into account the fact that different speech communities have different ways of organizing ideas in writing.
A common idea, for example, is not expressed in the same way in different languages. What we name by the cultural meaning is important to know when we have to refer to the translation of a foreign text: many factors have to be taken into consideration: the speaker, the interlocutor, the situation of communication, as well as the context.
Our study covers a particular field of the rhetoric named “the rhetorical question”. It is commonly defined as an interrogative clause used to achieve some sort of rhetorical effect - posing a question to which the reader or listener is not expected to give an informative verbal response.
Rhetorical questions are frequent in academic contexts, since writers and speakers always tend to anticipate questions that readers or listeners themselves may be posing in their minds.
The aim of a rhetorical discourse is to transmit a message. Some specialized texts cannot be qualified as rhetorical, as poetry, which can be attractive with the right choice of words and rhythms without convincing the receptor. The scientific text also cannot be so: it is based on realities, while the rhetorical texts are on probabilities.
This figure of speech already exists in Arabic as well as in the French or English. Rhetoricians classified the rhetorical question in different ways. In Arabic, for example, the identification of this figure depends on the context. The structure of a real question and a rhetorical one is the same. We cannot say with absolute certitude that the question isolated from its context is a rhetorical one or not.
In French, however, the structure of a rhetorical question differs from that of a non-rhetoric one. Considered as the modal language by excellence, the French is rich in certain modal tenses, modalities, rhetorical expressions, and coordinating conjunctions which express a strong rhetorical meaning.
When we want to translate such figure of speech, it is important to contextualize the conversation in its authentic context. |
