In spite of feelings of anxiety, apprehension and nervousness are commonly expressed
by second foreign language learners. Teachers often attribute students’ unwillingness
to participate in the classroom to factors such as lack of motivation and low
performance without giving enough attention to anxiety, which is a common
phenomenon in learning foreign languages. The present study is an attempt to
investigate a possible relationship between foreign language anxiety and cooperative
learning attitudes and practices among university students. The study is built upon the
hypothesis that if students use cooperative learning strategy effectively, they would
not be anxious in the foreign language classroom. In order to verify the validity of the
hypothesis and to achieve the study intended aim, two questionnaires were elaborated
to a sample of 60 Master 1 students in the department of foreign languages at
Constantine University 1, and 12 teachers at the same department during the academic
year 2013-2014.The results obtained from the analysis confirmed the set hypothesis,
that cooperative learning do help students to overcome their anxiety of learning
foreign languages so as to promote their language production. |
