The Reading skill is very important for learners of English as a foreign language in order
to master the language. Through reading, students develop their ability to comprehend any
text and enrich their vocabulary and, therefore, achieve development in all academic areas.
The goal of this study is to investigate the role of reading short stories to develop the
pupils’ comprehension. Many pupils face difficulties in comprehending short texts, and
this is due to the fact that they do not read and they do not give importance to reading. So,
if pupils read short stories they will develop their reading comprehension, in order to check
the hypothesis the data collected through the use of pretest and post-test administered to
third year pupils at Benyahia Mouhamed Middle School Jijel. Thirty pupils are the sample
of our investigation. So, we provided them with short stories to see whether they have
significant effects in developing their reading comprehension. The results showed that
short story has a positive effect in developing the pupils’ reading Skill |
