Résumé : |
The aim of this study is to find out which variety of English Master 1 students at the University of Constantine use: British English, American English, or a combination of both. The purpose is to determine whether these students are aware of the differences between both varieties when writing, and where they got their influences from. British English is normally the variety instated by the Algerian educational curriculum, but influences of American English due to exposure to different media are strong and have consequently a great impact on students that can be reflected in their written productions. This study took place with the participation of twenty Master 1 students. They filled in a questionnaire and had a test which investigated their vocabulary and their attitude and awareness vis-a-vis the two varieties. The obtained results revealed that there was a discrepancy regarding the fact that the majority of students claimed to use British English, but at the same time, their influences to English language through television was mainly American. This variability was reflected in the test, since students were switching from one variety of English to another unconsciously. On the basis of the results, the hypothesis we tested came to be confirmed, in that if Master 1 students are aware of the English they are learning and using, it will lead them to use each variety consistently in their written productions |
