Résumé : |
The present dissertation is an Arabic-English comparative study which aims at
examining the translation of some culture-specific terms from Arabic into English and some
of the various strategies involved when dealing with the translation of culture-specific terms.
The study takes as an example the Master students’ translation of some sentences into
English. The study seeks at shedding light on the cultural gaps that may cause problems while
translating from one language culture into another. Furthermore, the analysis is carried out
with regard to translation from the target reader’s point of view and translation from a
sociolinguistic perspective.
Culture-specific terms are identified in the original Arabic text, and put into cultural
categories. They are further compared with their translation into English and analysed. Their
effectiveness is then dealt with in terms of producing a target language text carrying the same
meaning as the source language text. The analysis results show that cultural aspects that are
not understood by the translator cannot be rendered clearly into the target culture. Thus,
cultural knowledge is very important in translation. It follows then that, however difficult is
the task, the meaning of the Arabic sentences is almost wholly kept through the translation. |
