Résumé : |
The purpose of this research work is to determine whether and to what extent
transfer from Standard Arabic affects the Algerian students’ usage of the English
prepositions at, in and on. In order to examine our hypothesis, a test is given to thirty
students belonging to second year LMD students at English Department, Mentouri
University, Constantine. This test consists of twenty sentences where students are
asked to fill in the gaps with one of the prepositions at, in or on that can express
spatial, temporal or other meanings. Besides, they can also put Ø where no of these
prepositions are needed. The results deduced from the analysis of the students’
answers show that Algerian learners usually transfer from Standard Arabic and
Algerian Arabic. Standard Arabic is often the source of learners’ incorrect usage of
the English prepositions at, in and on. Consequently, this research confirms our
hypothesis. However, Algerian Arabic has an important role as an additional reason
which leads to negative transfer since it is the most spoken by Algerian learners |
