Résumé : |
The present work aims at investigating the role of human memory in retaining and learning
L2 vocabulary, in second year students of English at the University of Constantine.
Accordingly, it examines the capacity of each individual student to remember and hold
information during learning, and the ways that are used to improve learners’ memory. Second,
it also examines the learners’ language proficiency, especially mastering a good amount of
second language vocabulary.Hence, it is hypothesized, in this study, that if learners own good
memory retention, they can achieve a great number of L2 vocabulary than those with less
memory retention. To achieve the research purposes, the study used two main tests and a
questionnaire. These two means of research have been used with a sample of 40 students from
the population of second year LMD students. The two tests were chiefly designed to measure
student’s memory ability (recall ability), and the vocabulary test has been done to assess
students’ language aptitude (synonyms, antonyms and word’s form). The questionnaire
together with the two tests revealed students’ way of thinking about memory and learning
vocabulary. The various results obtained, which are in the direction of our hypothesis, still
give much more importance for teachers to develop learners’ competence with its focusing on
vocabulary aspect in a foreign language, and more specifically to improve students’ memory
in the classroom by providing certain strategies that uncover the function of individual
differences in memory abilities and its relation to learning |
