This research work aims at addressing students’ difficulties with organization and development of
ideas in their productions, and suggesting the outline as an effective prewriting strategy to
overcome them and write by then better compositions. This study also aims at investigating
teachers’ attitudes towards writing, its process and the outline as a prewriting stage. Accordingly,
it is hypothesized that using an outline as a prewriting strategy would help students write
compositions with well-organized and well-developed ideas. To achieve the research objectives,
a teachers’ questionnaire and a students’ test were used for data collection and analysis. The former
was administered first to get more insights about students’ writing, and the outline to support the
hypothesis. The latter, however, was designed to check the effectiveness of the outline. Teachers’
responses confirmed the importance of the writing process and the outline. They also affirmed that
students face difficulties in organizing and developing the content of their ideas and that the outline
helps overcome those difficulties. Moreover, the findings obtained from the test revealed that the
outline has a positive impact on students’ essays organization and development of ideas.
Therefore, it is concluded that the outline is in fact an effective prewriting strategy when writing
compositions. |
