Arabic and English are two different languages with different systems and
structures. This difference maybe problematic for students to translate across these
two languages. The present study is mainly concerned with the difficulties students
might face while translating texts containing complex sentences from Arabic into
English and the strategies they use.
Thus, the present research work examines, through a questionnaire and a
translation test; the way master-one students of the Department of Translation
translate complex sentences from Arabic into English. It attempts to find out the
strategies master-one students employ in translating it from the mother tongue into
the second language.
Through the questionnaire and translation test, it is clearly demonstrated
that master-one students face problems in translating the complex sentence; mostly
of a syntactic nature. The results show that the students resort to some strategies
such as the use of the complex sentence structure, the use of the simple sentence
structure and the use of the omission strategies to translate complex sentences from
Arabic into English. The students’ methods were in some cases successful and in
other cases unsuccessful. |
