Teaching English as a Foreign Language Teacher Talk Learners’ Oral Learners of ‘Fadila |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The present study aims at examining how teachers can create supportive environment that
engages all learners in purposeful learning to opt for promoting interaction amongst
learners themselves, as well as teachers and learners. Thus, this research sets out to
consider the importance of classroom interaction in which learners are given more
opportunities to exert and rehearse language output. To construct our research, two
questionnaires have been distributed to teachers and second year learners in ‘Fadila
Saadane’ high school so as to gather the needed data to be analyzed through descriptive
statistics. In the light of the results obtained, we found that there exists a discrepancy in the
interpretative perception of our teachers and learners populations about length and quality
of classroom talk. Despite the fact that teachers attested that their talk time is not dominant
in the classroom, learners indicated the opposite that it is not adequate in terms of length,
in addition to their learning preferences they would like to have more chances to practice
the language. Results shed light too on how teachers endow with corrective feedback. On
the basis of the results, the hypothesis has been confirmed, in that formal and functional
features of teacher talk promote learners’ interaction. |

Language Science Studies Assessment Reading under the Competency-Based Language Teaching |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This work aims at analyzing the assessment methods of reading comprehension mostly conducted in fourth-year classes of Algerian middle schools, then discussing and verifying their compatibility with the assessment criteria of the Competency-Based Approach to Language Teaching (CBALT) which is a new approach of teaching and competencies assessment. For this purpose, we have hypothesized that if reading comprehension assessment in English in the Algerian fourth-year middle school matches the CBALT assessment criteria, then it will probably show pupils' competencies. To test our hypothesis, a classroom observation at a middle school has been carried out in three out of six classes of Grade 4 pupils. The observed classes consisted of 29 pupils i.e. 87 pupils out of 174. The subjects of this study are 15 / 16 years old. The observation aims first at identifying and evaluating reading comprehension activities in the two sequences “Read and Consider” and “Reading and Writing”, in File Five: “Dreams, Dreams…” of the fourth-year middle school textbook, On the Move. The second aim was to know whether the assessment matches the norms under the Competency-Based Approach to Language Teaching. To this end, reading comprehension activities both in the classroom and in the final examination (BEM: Brevet d’Enseignement Moyen) were evaluated. The results came to validate and confirm our hypothesis in that the methods of assessing reading comprehension were incompatible with the CABLT assessment standards and do not assess efficiently pupils’ competencies. |

Teaching English as a Foreign Language Evaluating Learners’ Secondary Attitudes Activities |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The present study projects learners’ and teachers’ views on the textbook ‘At the
Crossroads’. This research highlights the textbook’s strengths and weaknesses from the
viewpoints of teachers and learners, whereby the study was oriented to focus on whether
the tasks and activities are communicative. Therefore, it sets out to highlight whether the
textbook encloses on a variety of language practice to opt for developing communicative
competence. To construct our research study, we have designed and distributed two
questionnaires to collect the necessary data to tackle down our aim. The data gathered was
subjected to analysis through descriptive statistics. The findings deduced from the analysis
of both questionnaires were in general in favor of the textbook. Though, our hypothesis
came to be rejected. The results showed that though the textbook ‘At the Crossroads’ is
built around and structured on a variety of tasks and activities that enhance learners’
interaction, it proved to be not suitable for application in the Algerian environment,
because of class size and time constraints. |

Language Sciences Listening Skills Using Materials |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The importance of the listening skill in daily communication determines its crucial role in foreign language learning. In spite of its importance, listening comprehension has received slight interest in language instruction. Most EFL learners seek imitating native speakers. One way to provide real language listening practice is to implement authentic aural materials in EFL classrooms. The fundamental purpose of this study was to examine the influences of aural authentic materials on listening comprehension in learners of English as a foreign language. The secondary purposes of the study were to identify the potential problems that EFL learners often face when listening to the target language and to determine the effects of authentic materials on EFL learners‟ attitudes towards learning English. To achieve our aims behind this study, we adopted the analytic method; we analyzed teachers and learners‟ questionnaires in addition to some notes we have been taking for more information while learners were responding to the questionnaire. The learners involved in the present study enrolled in a twenty-week Listening and Speaking training. The teachers were taken randomly from the English department and the private institute ULC. The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that the use of authentic listening materials in EFL classrooms helped increase the learners‟ listening comprehension ability. Hence, implementing authentic materials in EFL classrooms, especially at early stages (middle and high school) is a crucial technique for improving learners‟ listening comprehension |
