This research work is built on the observation that students fail to express themselves through grammatically correct sentences in speaking and writing. It aims at finding whether the grammar activities in “New Prospects” are of a communicative type or not. It is also intended to investigate the appropriateness of the teaching environment to apply Communicative Language Teaching principles and the difficulties that hinder its implementation. We hypothesize that grammar activities in “New Prospects” do not involve students in communicative tasks, and that teachers lack the required teaching/learning environment to implement Communicative Language Teaching. To achieve these aims, we have conducted an examination of the grammar activities in relation to the Communicative Language Teaching objectives. For the sake of collecting information about the teaching environment and the impediments, we have addressed a Teachers’ questionnaire. Our research findings revealed that “New Prospects” does not meet Communicative Language Teaching principles in terms of grammar activities. As regards the students’ involvement, most activities foster individual work; collaborative opportunities are not catered for. It was also found that teachers lack the adequate environment to apply the communicative approach. The low English level students have and the large numbers of students per classes are the most noticeable obstacles.
