present research aims at analyzing first year students of English written productions for any
deviations related to their use of the prepositions ‘in’ ‘at’ and ‘on’ in their written products, at
that University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine. The objective of this study is to find out
whether these students find problems while using the prepositional system in their written
compositions. Regarding student’s use of these prepositions, it is assumed that the frequency
of their errors is mainly related to the influence of the Arabic. To answer the research
questions and aims, data have been collected via a test and a questionnaire. The former was
administered to a sample of thirty first year students. However, the latter was given to a
sample of sixteen teachers of Written Expression. The findings obtained reveal that students
have serious problems concerning the use of prepositions, ‘in, on and at’. In addition, most of
the errors derive primarily from the interference of the great influence of the first language.
Based on the results obtained, it is highly recommended to put more emphasize on these
prepositions in order to realize higher degrees of language mastery. Moreover, more attention
should be given to the methods of teaching to find effective solutions for future problems and

foreign language, the present study aims at analyzing thirty second year students’ written
compositions at the Department of Letters and the English Language at University of Frères
Mentouri, Constantine 1. It identifies, classifies and describes the most frequent grammatical
errors committed by them based on Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982) Surface Strategy
Taxonomy. In the light of this error analysis, the research also aims to understand the sources
of their production and investigate teachers’ attitudes towards the role of grammar in writing
and what kind of solutions they may provide to help students reduce their errors’ occurrences.
To achieve the research objectives, a students’ test and a teachers’ questionnaire were used for
the data collection and analysis. Results indicate that errors of misformation represent the
most recurrent errors type committed in students’ compositions. The scrutiny of their
deviations demonstrated that their presence is mainly related to analogical or interference
errors. This denotes as we have found students’ ignorance and misuse of the target language
grammar rules and the influence of the first language on the second language learning. In
addition to that, teachers’ responses confirmed the crucial role of grammar in writing and how
it is important to help students reduce their errors and improve their writing skill by exposing

stress through the theory of optimality. The purpose of this research is to find out
which constraints are involved in word stress assignment, and which of them are
constantly violated by EFL students and subsequently resulting in errors in stress
placement. It is assumed that students would consistently violate the same set of
constraints. In order to achieve the research objectives, a questionnaire was, first,
administered to assess the students overall knowledge about word stress, the
difficulties they face when placing it, and the different strategies they resort to in
order to assign it. A test was, then, administered to the same sample of students in
order to collect the needed data for the optimality analysis. The test was a stress
assignment task to three lists of words: words which comply with the rules of stress
in English, words which are exceptions to these rules, and made up words which in
turn complied with the rules of stress. The results of the questionnaire show that
most students are aware of what word stress is. Most of their difficulties stem from
the significant amount of rules which govern the position of the stress in English and
their exceptions. The results of this research work show that third year students at
the University of Frere Mentouri, Constantine consistently violated two constraints:
“WSP” and “ALIGN-R”. We can conclude that students are not aware of stress
behaviour in syllables containing weak centres, and that students face major
difficulties especially when it comes to words containing iambic feet. This, in turn,
only partially proves the suggested hypothesis if we take into consideration the
number of participants in this research work and the small sample of words used in

second year students of English give importance to the different context of polysemous
words, they will translate them successfully. To check the hypothesis, a questionnaire and a
test have been administered to sixteen second year students in order to collect data for our
research. They have been administered to look into students‟ knowledge of polysemy, their
translation of polysemous words using the bilingual dictionary and their dependence on the
context to achieve a successful translation. As a result, the findings of the test show that
students fail in translating polysemous words when using the bilingual dictionary without
taking the context into consideration. Thus, the hypothesis is not confirmed (If second year
students of English take the context into consideration, they will be able to determine the
