Strictness, rigidity and monotony lead to the production of negative feelings which hamper the learning process. This study aims at investigating the role of humour in raising interest, increasing motivation, and enhancing learning and therefore creating a positive and a conducive learning environment. It is hypothesized in this study that learning would become easier and more enjoyable if humour is incorporated appropriately in the classrooms of English as a foreign language. To confirm the stated hypothesis, two questionnaires were used to collect data. The first questionnaire was destined to a random sample of English language teachers, and the second one was presented to a randomly selected 35 students of second year. Both questionnaires were administered at the Department of Letters and English Language in the University of Constantine 1. The research findings show that both participants, teachers and students, consider humour as a significant and an effective motivational factor that makes learning easier and more enjoyable.
