This current study aims at investigating the effect of anxiety on students‟ speaking skill. It also explores useful options to improve students‟ oral production and to draw the oral expression teachers‟ attention to the importance of reducing the students‟ level of anxiety during oral expression sessions. It is hypothesized that Oral Expression teachers can reduce the level of first year LMD students‟ anxiety to enhance their students‟ oral communication. Two questionnaires were administered, one for a random sample (forty students) of first year LMD students at Constantine University, department of Letters and English Language, and the other questionnaire for sixteen teachers of oral expression from the same department. The data collected show that most foreign language learners experience anxiety. This feeling is due to many factors such as communication apprehension, fear of making mistakes and test anxiety which hinder their oral production and lead to a weak performance during oral expression sessions. Moreover, the results show different activities on which the students and teachers can rely to minimize foreign language speaking anxiety and help to promote their oral performance. |
