This study aims to investigate the role of using crossword puzzle as a teaching strategy to
increase third year literary stream students’ familiarity with new words at Bouhatem
secondary school, Mila. As first step, we put forward one main hypothesis "if students learn
vocabulary through crossword puzzle, their level of achievement in writing (use adequate
vocabulary, exact spelling and memorization) would increase. To test the already stated
hypothesis, two questionnaires and a test are used׃ the. First, the teachers’ questionnaire is
administered to collect data about teachers’ opinions about the techniques teachers use when
teaching new words in their lessons. Second, apre-test and a post-test areconducted. In the
pre-test, students are supposed to fill in themed crossword puzzles with the appropriate word.
In the post-test, students are asked to write a paragraph about this theme.The results show that
learners have learnt nearly all the unfamiliar vocabulary items that they havedealt with in the
pre-test in terms of usage, exact spelling and memorization. So, students’ familiarity with new
words can be increased via crossword puzzles. Thus, crossword puzzle should be incorporated
in teaching as teaching strategy |
