Applied Language Studies DICTIONARY LEARNING DELEXICAL VERB COMBINATIONS |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
purpose of this study is to shed some light on dictionary use in learning English delexical combinations. Our aim is to check whether the representation of delexical verb combinations in this dictionary can be helpful for second year students of English at Constantine University I who are likely to face problems with this type at combinations. This research is carried out through three tasks: a filling in the gap task with the appropriate delexical verb: to have, to give, to make, to take. In the second and third tasks, the students are asked to explain the meaning of delexical combinations in context without using a dictionary and then by using a dictionary. The dictionary used in checking the meaning of the combinations under study is Oxford learners’ Pocket dictionary(2008). The results of the test show that in most cases, students were unable to understand the meaning of delexical combinations which indicates that they are unfamiliar with such combinations, and that the use of this kind of combinations by students is very limited. On the other hand, the results show that OLPD is relatively useful for the students. Even though it provides the meaning of some delexical combinations it still needs to be enriched with a larger set of these combinations. |
