The present research intends to shed light on acronymy as one of word formation strategies used to enrich Present English vocabulary. It focuses on the subject of acronyms lexicalization in English. Consideration in this study is given to the nature of the relation between the acronym and its source from the one hand and that between the acronym and its meaning from the other. This research is interested in the morphological, graphic and semantic changes that an acronym undergoes during its life after it has been formed in English. Another aspect of this study concerns the influence of the graphic form on the lexicalization of an acronym and the factors that favor the entrance of the latter as an independent lexical item in English. In this research, it is hypothesised that the relation between an acronym and its meaning is stronger than the relation between the acronym and its full form. It is also hypothesised that the graphic form of the acronym has an influence on its lexicalization in English. It is as well hypothesised that the use of an acronym frequently, constantly and in the many fields of life helps in its process of lexicalization. The mentioned hypotheses are checked through two tests administered to 3rd year students at the department of English, University of Constantine 1 as well as through a corpus based study using a webcorp concordance program to see how acronyms behave in their natural contexts. The results found confirm the formulated hypotheses. The findings obtained from the tests and the webcorp concordance program indicate that acronyms show a morphological demotivation in English; they become attached to a meaning and lose the relation with their full forms. In addition, it was revealed that acronyms are not just new surface of their sources; they are, in fact, new linguistic signs that can undergo semantic changes with the passage of time. It was also found that acronyms written in their lowercase form like ‘laser’ become so accepted in English; most of the subjects considered them as true words since they ignored that these acronyms are indeed special creations in English standing for longer phrases. The results of the study suggest again that an acronym which is used frequently, constantly and in other domains rather than its domain of specialization will find its way into the lexicon of that language and will be treated as any other lexicalized itemNote de contenu : Appendices. Learners of English as a foreign language find it difficult to perform since it is essential to realize whether a specific action or utterance calls for an apology or not and make use of appropriate linguistic forms. The current study aims at investigating the apology strategies used by 60 Algerian undergraduate students of English at the University of Constantine 1 in relation to social status, social distance and severity of the offense. It is hypothesized that the most predominant factor that determines the selection, frequency and intensity of apology strategies is the seriousness of the offense. Data for analysis are collected through a Discourse Completion Questionnaire. Interviews are also conducted. The findings reveal that the respondents prefer giving direct expressions of apology and taking on responsibility more than the other strategies. They also resort to new strategies.
These include a call to hold anger, determinism and arrogance. The results further show that EFL learners intensify the apologies given to high status interlocutors to evade academic penalty.
They give simple expressions of apology to acquaintances but polite and complex ones to strangers. Such formal apologies are given to close friends when the offense is perceived as severe. Learners’ intensified apologies are given more frequently in high severity situations. It becomes obvious that the severity of the offense is the predominant factor that determines the selection and intensity of apology strategies. All the interviewees agree that apology speech act maintains a good relationship among people. They believe using explicit apology teaching in a language classroom would enable them to select appropriate apology strategies in different contexts and that comparing the similarities and differences of Algerian Arabic and English apology could raise their ability to communicate in English.

7KH 4XU¶DQ is the miraculous verbatim Word of Allah, which addresses the entire humanity by its transcending time and space, and by the diversity and accuracy of its knowledge. Its wording is so concise and precise that no linguistic element is out of place, redundant or used haphazardly. On account of all its peculiarities, it is an unprecedented inimitable miracle. Although the numerous translations of its meanings have been major contributions to the spreading of Islam, only the Arab reader can enjoy the grace of the µ, MD]¶ miraculousness of some of its eloquent lexical items that hold and impart possible scientific implications, only recently uncovered with the advances of science and technology. This dissertation attempts to KLJKOLJKW WKH IDFW WKDW ZKDW LV ORVW ZKHQ WKH 4XU¶DQ is HQFRXQWHUHG LQ WUDQVODWLRQ LV WKH 4XU¶DQ itself as many of its miraculous features are exclusively granted to its authentic language (Arabic). Thus, this research explores equivalence and faithfulness and investigates the possibility of preserving the meanings, particularly possible scientific inferences as one of the i3jaz features, of some science-related words through a comparative analytical study of these divine words and their English counterparts in five widespread translations. The review has revealed that the renditions suffer linguistically from serious shortcomings, non-equivalence, mistranslation and lack of accuracy; leading consequently to a partial or total absence of the scientific dimension. Subsequently, the study has drawn the conclusion that the KRO\ 4XU¶DQ LV definitely untranslatable (yet, if it has to be translated at all, literalness is the key to approximate most of these words true meanings); for any translation is certainly doomed to failure and could never ever serve, in any way, as a substitute for $OODK¶V PHVVDJH since it is nothing but a mere desperate attempt to approach the most eloquent inimitable speech of all speeches WKH 4XU¶DQ .

The study focuses on lexical collocations, namely, VERB+NOUN. It aims at measuring the collocational competence of learners of English as a Foreign Language, pinning down the underlying causes of errors, and making some recommendations to remedy the situation by identifying the main areas of difficulty. It is hypothesised that Second year EFL undergraduate students at Université des Frères Mentouri (Constantine 1) would have a low level of mastery in respect to the usage and comprehension of V+N collocations. It is also hypothesised that the aforementioned learners would not be adequately aware of the importance of using collocations. In addition, the study hypothesises that the essays of second year EFL undergraduate students at Université des Frères Mentouri (Constantine 1) would fail to use Verb + Noun collocations appropriately. The sample is sixty six EFL students.The teachers will be able to design appropriate material to raise their learners‟ awareness of the concept of collocation, and, therefore, improve their level. The British National Corpus, collocation checker, and Oxford Online Collocation Dictionary are the tools chosen to measure Algerian learners‟ collocational competence. The findings confirm the hypotheses emphasising Algerian EFL learners‟ unawareness of the importance of collocations. In addition, the findings show that the influence of the mother tongue, along with some other factors (approximation and synonymy), are the primary causes of errors.
