Résumé : |
The identity and the other are of the most important issues in contemporary comparative studies. The terms are the most complex in Human Sciences. These are elements of the identity of any nation or people past, present, and future. Any unbalance in those elements would lead it to get blurred and melted identity. In effect, the Algerian identity has had serious violations during French occupation, who worked for the elimination of its historical, religious, linguistic, and cultural roots, but in vain. Such a phenomenon was expressed through the novel written in French in Algeria by a French and Algerian writers like Camus, and Dib, which the researcher has brought together under the title: The Identity and the Other in Camus and Dib’s Novels: A Comparative Study. The study tries to show the images of the identity and its dimensions together with their relations expressed by these novelists in one language that is French, and on one land –Algeria- in attempts to prove each other's identity, and in a demand for self-identity. To highlight the aforementioned identities, a comparative
approach was adopted. The study is composed of a theoretical part of three chapters discussing respectively the French identity, the Algerian identity, and their constituting elements. The practical part is a comparative study of two novels by Camus, namely L’étranger (The Stranger), and La peste (The Plague), and three novels by Dib, viz. La Grande Maison (The Big House), L’incendie (The Fire), and Le métier à tisser (The Loom).
The study is terminated by a conclusion in which it was shown that the identity has a civilizational and a geographic affiliation, and that it is intertwined between gender (Arabic, Amazigh and Latin), history (French, Arab/Algerian), religion (Christianity and Islam), language (Arabic, French, Algerian Arabic), culture (Western/French; Arabic/Islamic, Algerian). |
