There has been, until now, no Algerian references to evaluate growth. The aim of this study was to develop reference growth centiles (weight, height, Body Mass Index) for Algerian children and adolescents (6– 18 years of age) schooled in Constantine according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Ours secondary objectives were to comparing growth and corpulence of our sample with those of other Algerians and foreigners; examining the height secular evolution; and evaluating the prevalence of stunting, thinness, overweight and obesity according to national and international references. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 23 public schools on 7772 healthy school children (54.9% girls) in the city of Constantine (2008/2009). The anthropometric measures were weight, height and birth date. The Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) method was used for curve smoothing. Our data were presented with local data from Arab and European countries, international references from WHO (2007) and the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF 2000; 2007). The results showed that between 11 and 13 years (puberty), girls were taller and heavier than boys. For girls, the median height and weight increased until 16 and 17 years, respectively; whereas in boys, they still showed increase with age. BMI Median values for both sexes increased with age. Girls had lower BMI values than boys before the age of 10 years but they were higher until 18 years of age. Weight and height median curves of our study were intermediate in comparison to those observed in other Arab countries, while those of BMI were generally less. They were higher than French reference values until 13 years. Median curves of weight, height and BMI of our study were generally lower than those of WHO reference at all ages. The prevalence of overweight (including obesity) and obesity in girls and boys was 13.7% and 3.0%, respectively according to IOTF (2000) standards, and 16.9% and 4.9% according to WHO (2007). According to IOTF, girls were more affected by excess malnutrition. The prevalence of stunting and thinness according to WHO (2007) was 2.8% and 3.3%, respectively. Curves which we developed according to international guidelines could serve as a national reference for monitoring growth and development in Algerian children and adolescents. They could be used as a complement to the 0 to 5year-old WHO 2006 standards.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. In Algeria, cancer is the subject of a national control plan (2015 - 2019). The cancer has negative effects on the nutritional state of the patient, effects caused by the disease itself, treatments, the conditions of the patient journey (interval of access to care and diagnosis) and the reduction of food intake. The result is risk of occurrence of malnutrition. The objective of the study was to evaluate the nutritional status and diet of patients with no-digestive cancer during anti-cancer treatment. This was a descriptive cross-sectional survey carried out during the period from August 2015 to February 2016 at the level of the medical oncology and radiotherapy departments of the AntiCancer-Center of the Wilaya of Batna (Algeria). It targeted patients aged from 25 to 65 years with no-digestive cancer in this case that of the breast, ovary and cervix during their treatments (chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy). The patient journey was quantified by calculating the time (in days) of access to care and diagnosis: from the occurrence of the first clinical signs to access to treatment. The disease was classified into three stages: tumor, invasive (presence of nodules) and metastatic. The evaluation of the nutritional status was carried out according to three methods: Buzby index, Objective evaluation of the nutritional status (BMI, weight loss and albuminemia) and the Calculation of the score “Patients Generated- Subjective Global Assessment” (PG-SGA). Food consumption was assessed by the repetitive 24h recall questionnaire (3 times) and the frequency of consumption. Food intake per day was quantified using household units and a photo manual and then converted to weight using previously established equivalences. Food quantities were converted to nutrients using a compiled table. Nutrients intakes and food consumption frequencies were calculated and compared to the recommendations. 315 patients with breast cancer (85%), ovarian (8%) and cervix (7%) were included in our study. The duration of the disease (from the first clinical signs at the time of the survey) was greater than one year (351 days) for 50% of the women surveyed. The duration of the course between the first signs and the access to the first treatment was greater than 4.5 months for 50% of the women surveyed. According to the Buzby index, 54.5% of the patients were undernourished. According to the objective method of assessing nutritional status, 53.9% of the patients suffered from severe or moderate malnutrition. By contrast, according to the PG-SGA Score, 60% of these patients were at high risk of malnutrition requiring symptom management and / or nutritional intervention. Patients had inadequate energy intake (73%), macronutrients, vitamins and minerals. The deterioration in the nutritional status of cancer patients is mainly determined by the type of treatment (p = 0.004) and energy intake (p = 0.012). The high prevalence of malnutrition (between 53% and 60%) was partly due to late access to care and the nature of care. In order to detect early malnutrition and situations at risk of malnutrition, the assessment of nutritional status should be an integral part of the overall management of cancer patients at CAC Batna (Algeria).Note de contenu :

The importance of breastfeeding is now obvious and is no longer to prove. WHO advocates exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months, and continuation of breastfeeding until the age of 24 months with the introduction of adequate supplementation foods (WHO, 2003). According to a national survey (2012), at the end of the 6th month, the percentage of exclusively breastfed children i less than 3% (MSPRH, 2015). The purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing the practice of breastfeeding. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 965 mother/ child pairs attending a vaccination center in El Khroub commune, during the period from 03 April to 28 June 2015. At 4 months, 29.6% of infants were breastfed exclusively with an average duration of 54.9 days +43.3. Twenty-four point three percent of infants were weaned with an average weaning age of 106.4 days + 50.4. Multivariate analysis revealed that prematurity, cesarean delivery, and father's unemployment affect the practice of breastfeeding at birth. At 4 and 6 months, it is the cesarean delivery mode and the mother's work that negatively affect the choice of breastfeeding mode. In addition, the lack and insufficiency of milk is the reason most often put forward by women (66.8%) for having stopped breastfeeding. Breastfeeding was done in 33.2% of cases beyond24 hours and the introduction of food was done very early (first half of life). Efforts must be made by health professionals to help parents make the best choice by providing them with complete and quality information about infant feeding. At the maternity level, care must be taken not to separate infants from their mothers and thus avoid late breastfeeding. The use of caesarean section should be reviewed by health actors.
