iron oxyhydroxides (Ferrihydrite, Goethite and Hematite) towards phosphate ions. As
application, the evaluation of the retention of phosphate by mining sediments was
evaluated. Ferrihydrite, goethite and hematite were prepared in laboratory. The used
sediments came from a mining site located in the North-eastern of Algeria in the region
of Oum Toub.
The prepared iron oxyhydroxides and sediment samples were characterized by DRX,
DRIFT, SEM, BET, PZC, TGA, DSC and particles size analysis,. The obtained results
show that ferrihydrite has the highest surface area and particles size with the
predominance of micropores. Goethite and hematite are characterized by the presence of
mesopores. The sampled sediments consist essentially of quartz, jarosite, kaolinite,
schwertmannite and goethite.
Phosphate sorption was studied through macroscopics and spectroscopics analysis. The
macroscopic experiments were carried out in batch in order to determine the effects of
various parameters. Equilibrium and thermodynamic studies were performed.
The macroscopic results show that the phosphate ions fixation on the prepared iron
oxyhydroxides is strongly related to the pH; it is significant at acidic pH (pH <5). The
phosphate adsorption capacities of the iron oxyhydroxides follow the order:
Ferrihydrite> Goethite> Hematite. The calculated thermodynamic parameters show that
the adsorption process is endothermic in the case of ferrihydrite and exothermic in the
cases of goethite and hematite. The effects of the presence of foreign ions depend on the
nature of the ion and the iron oxyhydroxide. At pH <7, a decrease in the binding of
phosphate ions is recorded in the presence of Cd (II) ions in the case of goethite and
hematite. In the presence of Cu (II), Pb (II) and Cd (II), a clear improvement in the
binding is recorded in the case of ferrihydrite at pH> 7. In aquatic environment, the
phosphate uptake by the mining sediments is related to their composition. The
predominance of amorphous iron oxyhydroxides implies better adsorption. However,
that of quartz causes a decrease in the fixing rate.
The spectroscopic analysis (DRIFT) show that in the absence of competitive ions,
phosphates form inner sphere complexes with the symmetry C3v in the case of
ferrihydrite and the symmetry C2v in the case of goethite and hematite. The presence of
chromate and oxalate ions involves a modification of the mechanism of phosphate ions
retention. In the presence of cations, the formation of ternary complexes is shown in the
case of ferrihydrite. In mining sediments, phosphate replaces sulphate in shwertmannite.

Biologie Résumé : Our study is part of the deepening of our knowledge of a lotic ecosystem, the Boumerzeug wadi and its tributaries, which has been the subject of various complementary approaches to characterize its physico-chemical and biological quality The objective of this work is to assess the level of contamination of contamination of the abiotic and biotic compartments of the ecosystem by trace metals (TM) whose anthropogenic origin is added to the natural background levels. The samples were collected from 20 sites on five occasions spread over 15 months. Among the elements determined, some are essential to the physiological functions of organisms such as Cu, Cr, Ni, Ni, Zn, others are toxic such as Cd and Pb and finally Mn is a natural element without consequences on living beings. The TM measured in surface sediments follow the following sequence: MnZn > > Cu > Pb Ni>Co> Cd. The study of benthic macroinvertebrate fauna compartments highlights a faunal impoverishment following the disappearance of species sensitive to organic and/or metallic pollution, the method does not allow the nature of stress to be identified. The hydrobiological quality of the watercourse, expressed by the biotic index, reflects a situation of significant disturbance illustrated by the drop in values from upstream to downstream. The transfers of TM to the different parts, roots, leaves of Spinacia oleracea revealed that the chenopodiaceae concentrates and sequesters in its roots all TM except zinc, which has a higher content in the leaves. Thus, the roots seem to constitute a barrier that reduces the transfer of metal elements to the aerial part, while zinc, an essential metal, is translocated to the leaves. The hierarchy of average TM contents in spinach is as follows: Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Ni> Co>Cd. The transfer of TM to Physa or Physelle acuta lung gastropods in the various specimens, soft tissues and shells of P. acuta adults/juveniles) reflects the bioavailability of the element. The spatio-temporal data of TM contents in Physa acuta record the following order of abundance: MnZn > Cr> Cu > Ni>Pb > Co > Cd. All detected heavy metal concentrations were higher in soft tissue than in shell for adults and juveniles. There was a significant effect of the age (p < 0,001) on the concentrations of the eight metals, the adults of P. acut showing higher concentrations than juvenile. The biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) of Cd in soft tissue was higher than 1, hence the usage of this species as a bio indicator for Cd pollution The present study provides data and information on the concentrations of 8 TM (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the sediments of the Boumerzoug wadi and its tributaries and their transfer to plant and animal. It will provide a database and knowledge base that could provide new information for any future biomonitoring study of freshwater aquatic ecosystems.

Biologie Résumé :
The main goal of this PhD was to evaluate the impact of the anthropogenic activities (urban, industrial or agricultural activities) on aquatic ecosystemsin the northeastern region of Algeria. The evaluation focused on the Rhumel and Endja wadis, which drain urban, industrial and diffuse discharges and feed the Beni Haroun dam, the largest source of drinking water, irrigation and fishing in Algeria. In order to achieve our goal, this work was based on a multiple approach involving the terrain, with 6 campaigns of water and sediment sampling on 16 points spread over the wadis and reservoir lake, an analytical approach through physicochemical characterization of water and sediments, a biological and ecological approach by calculating biotic index via benthic macroinvertebrate fauna, and assessing the bioavailability of trace metals through metallic contamination of macroinvertebrates and four species of fish Cyrinus carpio, Abramis brama, Carassius carassius et Barbus callensis. The sediments of the Béni Haroun dam and wadis are slightly alkaline, have high conductivity and medium organic matter content. The spatio-temporal data of the pseudo-total levels of ETM in the sediments record the following order of abundance: Fe > Zn > Pb > Cu > Se. The concentrations are : 5920-33400 μg/g for Fe, 28,50-311,35μg/g for Zn, 2,30-115,35 μg/g for Pb, 2,25-41,25μg/g for Cu and ,02-2,69μg/g for Se. Indeed, the spatial distribution of heavy metals content reveals natural levels for Cu and Zn. Contamination by Fe, Se and Pb is widespread and affects all stations. This result has also been confirmed by the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and the contamination factor (CF), which suggest that these high levels are essentially anthropogenic. The collected macroinvertebrates reveal polymetallic contaminations dominated by iron, zinc and lead. Similarly, the levels of the fish's TMs reflect contamination of the ichthyological fauna of the Beni Haroun dam. The levels determined in the muscles of the four fish species exceed the critical contamination values regardless of the metals studied, making them unfit for consumption as they pose a risk to human health.Note de contenu :

Biologie Résumé : This study is part of the context of a multidisciplinary research on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. To assess the quality of water of the Rhumelwadi, its tributaries and the water dams HammamGrouzand BeniHaroun, to the organic pollution and possible metal contamination, we conducted for water and sediment compartments a set of physico-chemical approaches: physical and chemical parameters, major mineral elements, pollution parameters and dosage of five ETM (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn). This research involved five sampling points for the water compartment, both located at the two dams GrouzHammam and BeniHaroun,
and three on the Rhumelwadi, collected twelve times during 2009. For the sediment compartment, sixteen sampling points were selected in strategic locations and sampled twice during the month of January 2010 and April 2010. The set of parameters determined showed organic pollution characterized by fair to poor quality water from the wadiRhumel. Metallic contamination evaluated by SEM is almost negligible dissolved in water but fairly abundant in sediments which could cause high toxicity for aquatic fauna and flora, mainly marked by
levels of Cd, Cr, Zn and Pb higher than the estimated natural levels. The waters of dams HammamGrouzandBeniHaroun are exposed to pollution from various sources (urban, industrial and agricultural ...) despite treatment of wastewater in STEP. Their sediments show a significant metal contamination. A similar situation is observed for the waters of
Rhumelwadi and its tributaries, where the degree of pollution is important.
To remedy this problem, it would be important to better exploit the wastewater treatment plants, a wastewater collection and mastered most comprehensive, well while managing industrial and municipal discharges, which undoubtedly constitute a major threat to ecosystems aquatic. The purified water supply Rhumelwadi, its tributaries and therefore the
two dams HammamGrouzandBeniHaroun. They contribute to the reduced risk of organic pollution and heavy metal contamination of water and sediment compartments, and water conservation for serene life (better water management).

El-Kebir, oued Boumerzoug and oued Rhumel.
The mineralogical composition of the sediments was evaluated by X-ray fluorescence and
Infrared analysis. The contents of metals Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, organic matter and total phosphorus
were determined. Generally, the studied sediments are characterized by an alkaline pH, a high
electrical conductivity and significant contents of organic matter. The X-ray fluorescence
shows that the main components of the sediment matrix are calcium in major part, iron,
silicon and aluminum. The infrared spectra show the presence of carbonates, goethite and
Kaolinite.
The evaluation of the phosphorus retention in the sediments of the three oueds was assessed
by fractionation and adsorption tests. The obtained results show that phosphorus is mainly in
inorganic form with prevalence of calcic fraction. The phosphorus retention depends on the
samples composition. The sediments of oued El-Kebir retain more phosphorus than those of
oued Boumerzoug and Rhumel.
In a relation with the sediments composition and the method of phosphorus determination, a
phosphorus extraction scheme is proposed in this study by optimizing the used reagents and
the operating conditions.
By applying this extraction scheme, the spatiotemporal evolution of phosphorus speciation
during the year 2012, was studied in the sediments of the rivers which cross Constantine city:
oued Rhumel and its tributary Boumerzoug.
In the sediments of the two streams, the results show the predominance of the residual
fraction and the importance of phosphorus bound to detrital apatite. The evolution of the
exchangeable fraction and that related to authigenic apatite depends on the pH of the
sediments. The reducible fraction is characterized by a significant spatiotemporal evolution.
At the end of the summer period, the contribution of the residual organic fraction is less
significant.
Spatiotemporal changes in the distribution and the mobility of phosphorus are recorded in the
sediments of oued Rhumel. In those of oued Boumerzoug, phosphorus is more mobile in the
winter and spring."

phosphorus extraction scheme is proposed in this study by optimizing the used reagents and
the operating conditions.
