Résumé : |
The present research aims mainly at investigating the students’ awareness about the use of
False Friends when they are asked to write in English. Additionally, it seeks to shed light on
the negative effects that those words have on the students’ writing performance. Through two
questionnaires administered to 3rd year students and to teachers of writing at the Department
of English (University of Constantine), plus a test analysis for a sample of (20) 3rd year
students, we intended to check the hypothesis of this study, which is: if the students’ are
aware of False Friends and their negative effects on their writing performance, and are able to
identify the differences and the similarities between French and English, they will never fall
in the trap of False Friends. The results obtained of the field work revealed that the majority
of students are not aware of the notion False Friends; they usually do not pay attention to
them when they are composing and they tend to confuse between English and French
languages. In the light of these results, some recommendations would be suggested to both
teachers and students in order to overcome this problem |
