Résumé : |
This dissertation tries to depict the dehumanizing experience of Solomon Northup under
slavery which is accounted for in his autobiography Twelve Years a Slave. The first chapter is a
historical background which provides an overview of slave trade and the social conditions that
slaves witnessed in America, and a literary background to the slave narratives in America. The
second chapter consists of two parts. The first part deals with the depiction of different types of
dehumanizing processes Solomon was subjected to, and shows the perception of black people by
whites through their behavior with them. The second part shows Solomon’s will to regain his
liberty and how his education and preceding status as free man prevent him from admitting the
status of a slave. In spite of all the obstacles, Solomon never felt hopeless and kept trying until he
finally found a way to freedom. |
