Résumé : |
When students listen to English they face a lot of listening difficulties because most teachers
pay much more attention to the productive skills than to the perceptive skills. One problem
that faces learners of English as a foreign language is failure to perceive the weak form of
functional words especially those with schwa as a centre. The aim of this research is to
understand the problems that third year BA students of English, University of Constantine,
face while listening to natural native speech. It also aims at showing how to raise their
awareness to the importance of weak forms in listening comprehension in order to enhance
their perception of the latter when listening to native spoken English. We hypothesize that if
third year students of English were aware of the importance of weak forms in reception, they
would be able to improve their comprehension abilities. In order to test the hypothesis, a
questionnaire and a listening test have been administered to third year students of English.
The findings of the study confirm the hypothesis and show that third year students of English
have serious difficulties in recognizing the reduced forms, and that they are unaware of the
importance of weak forms in listening. They also reveal that being aware of the weak forms
and their rules is very important in helping the students to enhance their perceptive skills in
listening to naturally spoken English |
