Résumé : |
The present dissertation aims to investigate the effect of the use of bilingual
dictionaries on the 2nd year students‟ translation of English polysemous words. We
hypothesize that the bilingual dictionary might help the students to translate polysemous
words. For this reason, we devised a translation test where students were asked to translate
eleven sentences which include different nuances of the meaning of the polysemous verb “to
break”. We also provided a list which contains different meanings of the verb to “break” in
Arabic. This paper is divided into two chapters: The theoretical chapter includes an overview
on translation, polysemy and the bilingual dictionary in translation. The practical chapter
deals with the administration of a translation test and the analysis of the results. The results
show that the bilingual dictionary was not of a great help to the students in the translation of
the polysemous verb “to break”. |
