Résumé : |
Vocabulary is considered as an ongoing process; it usually develops with age. It is the key to
communication. Therefore, words are the most powerful weapon that any learner can own.
They are the basic building blocks of the language; not only for academic purposes, but also
for the entire life. Using authentic materials in the classroom improves the vocabulary of the
students. Authentic materials play an important role in teaching and learning a foreign
language. By using them, students deal with outside and real world. This study intended to
investigate the effects of authentic materials on vocabulary learning. It focused on how
authentic materials facilitate vocabulary development and what are the different types of
authentic materials used in the classroom? To test the hypothesis which is, the use of
authentic materials in the classroom improves students’ vocabulary learning, we follow a
survey research design using a questionnaire. The first questionnaire is administered to forty
Master 1 students in the Department of Letters and English Language at Frères Mentouri
University, Constantine1 in order to check whether they are in touch with authentic language
and the different techniques they follow to gain new words. The second questionnaire is
administered to ten teachers in the same department. It aims at knowing how vocabulary is
taught, and if authentic materials are utilized in delivering their courses. The results obtained
confirm our hypothesis. Both teachers and learners show positive attitudes towards the use of
authentic materials to develop vocabulary stock. As a result, the use of authentic materials, as
a teaching strategy, is proved to be a reliable and an effective tool. |
