Résumé : |
It is now unanimously accepted that motivation is one of the most important factors that affect
human behaviors. Thus, it plays a major role in the teaching/learning process, a student could
be intrinsically or extrinsically motivated to learn a language; either by one's own volition or
by external drives/motives. Grammar is considered to be the body of any language, because,
without it, the mastery of the language would be impossible. Hence, the aims of this
dissertation are to make the distinction between extrinsically and intrinsically motivated
students, and investigate which one of the two groups would perform better in grammar. The
questions that this research seeks to answer revolves around whether intrinsically motivated
learners are more proficient in learning grammar than extrinsically motivated ones, and to
what extent motivation influences their performance. In this respect, the underlying
hypothesis is that, if the learners are intrinsically motivated, their grammar performance
would be better than extrinsically motivated ones. In order to test this hypothesis, we have
adapted a scale (Intrinsic Motivation Inventory) to distinguish and measure the learners' type
of motivation. Surprisingly most of them were intrinsically motivated to learn grammar since
25 out of 37 students of the sample showed interest and enjoyment in the subject. After
assessing the scale results, we have applied the Oxford Grammar Test to the same students to
have an accurate data on their performance. Once this procedure was done, it was very well
clear that the intrinsically motivated students were more involved and interested to study
grammar without any pressure or stress, consequently, their test results were far better than
the other group. Hence, the results confirmed the validity of the hypothesis. |
