Résumé : |
Multi-word verbs are complex lexical units. Thus, understanding them may be problematic.
This research work attempts to show that Algerian learners of English tend to misunderstand
and avoid the use of multi-word verbs. It aims at investigating the preference of Algerian
second year students of English at Brothers Mentouri University, Constantine 01 towards the
use of multi-word verbs vs. one-word verbs. It has been hypothesized that the students prefer
the use of single-word verbs rather than multi word verbs. In order to check the validity of the
hypothesis, data were collected from 40 second year students by means of a questionnaire and
a test. The Results revealed that multi-word verbs significantly affect Algerian second year
students’ preferences. Most of them did avoid multi word verbs and failed to give their
equivalents and provide their right meanings. Moreover, the majority of the students prefer
the use of one-word verbs rather than multi word verbs, arguing that the latter are easier and
less confusing if compared to multi word verbs that are characterized by expressing multiple
meanings in addition to idiomaticity. Therefore, these findings corroborate previous studies
that show that learners of English as a foreign language do face problems in their process of
learning multi word verbs, especially the semantic and syntactic complexity of phrasal verbs.
This eventually leads them to develop avoidance towards multi word verbs |
