Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating the effectiveness of ellipsis on meaning of some Quranic
verses that include elliptic words while translating from Arabic into English. Our objective is to
raise students‘ awareness about the impact of ellipsis on the verses meaning. At the same time, we
want to check if students are able to decode ellipsis from the Quranic verses. Hence, we
hypothesised that; if first year Master students of English cannot decode the elliptic words from the
Quranic verses in English as effectively as in Arabic, this will have negative effect on the meaning
of the translated verses. To check the validity of the research hypothesis and reach our aims, two
research tools are used: a questionnaire and a test; both the questionnaire and the test were
administrated to first year Master students of English, Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at
the Department of Arts and the English Language in Brothers Mentouri University, Constantine.
The analysis and the discussion of the obtained data have shown that there is a contradiction
between what students said in their answers in the questionnaire, and their performance in their
translation in the test. So, what students said was not what they did. The misunderstanding of the
verses meaning is one of the difficulties that face students while translating, i.e., the majority of
them could not transfer the meaning of the verses as affectively as in the source language text and
they failed in decoding the elliptic words; So, this negatively effects on the meaning of the translated
verses. Therefore, our hypothesis has been confirmed |
