Résumé : |
This dissertation examines the use of Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird in
American schools in order to determine if the novel’s use is appropriate or not. To
achieve this goal, the work explores the reasons that have led To Kill a Mockingbird to
be one of the most challenged and banned novels in the history of America. The
dissertation analyses Harper Lee’s use of racial slurs and explores the various racial
themes. In addition, it analyses Harper Lee’s unreliable depiction of the AfricanAmerican community. This research elucidates the effects the novel has on different
categories of pupils as children may be negatively affected by this novel. In addition to
the language of the novel that makes African-American pupils hurt and uncomfortable,
To Kill a Mockingbird gives an unrealistic image of racism in America and makes rape
victims afraid and hesitant to talk and denounce their assaulters. As alternatives, the
present dissertation suggests a list of novels written by African-American writers that
are more appropriate to teach children about racism in the United States |
