Résumé : |
The existence of feelings of anxiety, confusion, embarrassment, and apprehension imposes itself as a
usual phenomenon that Foreign Language (FL) Learners encounter when they are engaging in oral
speaking activities inside the classrooms and sometimes outside. These feelings work as an obstacle for
students' communicative abilities improvement.
This study attempts to shed light on the effect of anxiety on students' speaking level and check the
effectiveness of cooperative learning strategies in improving their oral performance and reducing anxiety.
Then, states the reasons why cooperative learning can help reduce learning anxiety, and explains how to
conduct teaching and learning using various cooperative learning activities that can be applied in classes
well. In addition, the study investigates the factors that cause these feelings. The research presented other
strategies used such as creating warm relationships between teachers and students, enhancing the students’
self-confidence. Such strategies can reduce the levels of anxiety inside and outside students' classrooms.
Besides, these strategies are proposed by the English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers based on their
experience in teaching English as a foreign language, as well as, other suggestions gathered from the
students' questionnaire. In order to achieve the aims of the study I have chosen the questionnaire as an
instrument to collect the data. I have administered two questionnaires; one for 1st students of English, and
the other one for teachers of Oral Expression module in the department of Letters and English language,
Frère Mentouri University.
The findings of this research reveal that foreign language classroom anxiety has negative effects on
EFL students' speaking performance from the perspectives of both students and teachers. Besides, the
study indicated that 1st year students revealed significant levels of anxiety. In addition, younger students
revealed high scores of apprehension more than their older peers. Moreover, The teachers who have a high
level of experience in teaching English as a foreign language stated that the more learners are not exposed
to the language, the more feeling of anxiety is spread. Furthermore, the research showed how much
cooperative learning strategies are adopted by teachers and their effectiveness in enhancing students 'selfconfidence and improving their speaking abilities. Finally, the study presented a number of attributable
factors that cause anxiety, and some suggested procedures that should be adopted by the students their
teachers in order to alleviate this phenomenon. |
