Résumé : |
This research deals with the bank failures, which were one of the most significant aspects of the Great Depression in the United States, and the different reform measures taken by both Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt to save the banking system. The problems in the banks undermined public‟s confidence, weaknesses in the whole financial system were apparent and by the beginning of 1930, a growing wave of bank failures followed. This work is divided into two chapters; the first chapter explores the different causes of the banking crisis and its consequences on banks and people‟s confidence. The second chapter examines the various attempts that Hoover and Roosevelt did in order to avoid a large scale financial crisis during the 1930‟s. To some extent, the study shows that the banking distress in the United States was among the main reasons that led to the Great Depression and it did not only affect the banks but caused a distress in the whole economy as well. |
