But during the 1960s and the loss of most of her colonies, Britain turned her attention to Europe seeing in the Union the only way to secure her future. The British application for membership faced many problems both at home and within the European Community. At home opposition was found in the Labour Party which against this entry and in the European Community opposition came mainly from France. Finally, in 1973 Britain became a member of the European Community after many years of dispute with Europe. British Muslims have been seriously affected and suddenly became targets of serious physical attacks, verbal abuses and acts of vandalism against mosques and Muslim institutions. This dissertation deals with the impact of the London bombings on the Muslim community in Britain. The first chapter examines Islamophobia in Britain in the period preceding the 7/7 events on emphasizing on the perception of Islam and the situation of Muslims in Britain. The second chapter studies the negative impact of the bombings on the British Muslims and the rise of hostility and hate toward Muslims.
