Résumé : |
In the Nineteenth century during the reign of Queen Victoria, the English society experienced
massive changes and saw many events and evolutions. Women as a substantial part of this
society, enjoyed few of the legal, social and political rights that are now taken for granted in
Western countries. Their vocational opportunities were extremly limited and their lives were
devoted to the domestic sphere.
The present dissertation aims at exposing the different representations, status and roles of
women in the Nineteenth century in Britain. In order to display the restrictions that women
increasingly resisted and adopted throughout the century. The paper will specifically focus on
George Eliot’ Middlemarch entitled A Study of Provincial Life, which explores carefully
women’s place in a male-dominated world. |
