Résumé : |
The present research discusses the illusion and the reality of the American Dream
in Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller. The American Dream is the hopeful and positive
form of a better future that had motivated Americans for centuries to struggle for their
political rights and economic prosperity beside the assumption and the belief that their hard
work would allow them to achieve success and happiness for themselves and their families.
This study is an attempt to shed light on the failure of the American Dream and the reasons
that lay behind the collapse of this dream for many Americans, as the aim behind the play
is to show the plentiful flaws in the American Dream. This work gives a historical
background that covers the most significant reviews of the American Dream concerning its
early and current definitions and the changing conditions and circumstances in the USA
that have influenced the perception of the American Dream throughout history. Moreover,
this research explores the historical context of Death of a Salesman and the different
concepts of the American Dream held by the characters of the play. The discussion reveals
the reality of the American Dream in the 1930s as exposed by Arthur Miller and the
different ways and means used by the characters to achieve their dream of success. The
study eventually delves deeper into the presentation of the American Dream in Miller's
play to discover whether the dream that most Americans have been searching for is a
reality or just an illusion. |
