This study investigated the pupils’ awareness of using appropriate tenses while reporting
speech. It attempts to find out to what extent are second year secondary school pupils’ aware
of the fundamentals (tenses’ shift) of quoted and reported speech in English? And, to what
extent does pupils’ awareness of the fundamentals of quoted and reported speech in English
affect their use of tenses when reporting speech? It is hypothesized that “if second year high
school students’ were aware the fundamentals of quoted and reported speech in English, they
would make the necessary verb tense changes required for reported speech”. In order to test
and verify the research hypothesis, two research tools are used: a students’ questionnaire and
a test. The results obtained from the analysis of the questionnaire and test reveal that pupils
misuse appropriate tenses while reporting speech. So, the hypothesis is disconfirmed |
