English for science and technology is a branch of study which revolves around teaching
scientific and technological texts. Master 1 students of English at the University of Mentouri,
Constantine 1, specialized in Applied Language studies face considerable problems in
understanding and analyzing scientific texts. Rhetorical functions are known to be an
effective technique that helps students of English for science and technology to understand
scientific texts, even if they do not understand all the vocabulary used in the text. Therefore,
the present study aims at investigating the influence of using rhetorical functions as a
technique to enhance students performance in understanding scientific texts. It is
hypothesized that if Master 1 students are more aware of the usefulness of rhetorical
functions, they will comprehend the language of scientific texts and their performance will be
enhanced. To examine the validity of the hypothesis, two questionnaires were administrated
to both teachers and students at the Department of English, University of Mentouri,
Constantine 1, in addition to a test. After analyzing the data of both questionnaires
positive attitude towards the use of rhetorical functions for better understanding of scientific
texts. The results of the test showed that most students confuse between different types of

understand scientific texts regardless of the complexity of technical terms. |
