Résumé : |
Learning English as a foreign language is to a large extent determined by the vocabulary
knowledge learnt which contributes to a large extent to successful and effective communication.
Poor vocabulary is one of the main obstacles that slow down students’ speaking performance. This
study tries to elucidate the importance of vocabulary knowledge in learning the foreign language
through speaking and also attempts to cast light on the relationship between vocabulary and
speaking and the effects of the lack of vocabulary on students’ performance. For this, it is
hypothesised that the more sufficient and adequate vocabulary knowledge second-year English
students of English at École Normale Supérieure, Constantine 3 have, the better they perform and
express themselves. As a result, the researcher tries to suggest strategies that will help them clear
such a problem and enrich their repertoire. Two questionnaires used: one for 10 Oral Expression
teachers to see into how much they consider vocabulary when teaching and the other for 30
students of English in order to know whether they are mindful of the importance of vocabulary
knowledge when speaking and to identify the reasons behind their lack of vocabulary knowledge.
Besides, a test was designed so as to both gauge students’ knowledge and to highlight other
potential difficulties and limitations. The results showed that both teachers and students are aware
of the importance of vocabulary in speaking. The teachers also agree that lack of vocabulary
knowledge is the students’ commonest impediment that hinders their performance. In addition, the
students’ test showed that they have a lack of vocabulary knowledge. On the basis of the data
collected and analysed, some pedagogical implications for teachers were proposed to help them
pay more attention and consideration to develop the students’ vocabulary knowledge and to help
students reduce their vocabulary limitation problems. |
