Résumé : |
This study aims at investigating the ability of second year students of English at the university
of Constantine 1 to translate polysemous words using the bilingual dictionary. It also aims at
highlighting the role of the bilingual dictionary in helping students to select the adequate
equivalent of polysemous words in the target language. For this, it was hypothesized that if
second year students of English give importance to the different context of polysemous
words, they will translate them successfully. To check the hypothesis, a questionnaire and a
test have been administered to sixteen second year students in order to collect data for our
research. They have been administered to look into students‟ knowledge of polysemy, their
translation of polysemous words using the bilingual dictionary and their dependence on the
context to achieve a successful translation. As a result, the findings of the test show that
students fail in translating polysemous words when using the bilingual dictionary without
taking the context into consideration. Thus, the hypothesis is not confirmed (If second year
students of English take the context into consideration, they will be able to determine the
appropriate equivalents of polysemous words from the bilingual dictionary). |
