Adolescents as individuals with special needs and capacities, undergo a lot of changes
that seem to affect their way of learning and adapting to new circumstances. Adolescence as a
period of growth and identity for individuals to seek, adolescents find themselves facing a lot
of challenges. In this period of time, adolescents enter a new environment; the middle school
environment, that adds to their difficulty of coping with the different changes, where
motivation, interest and attitudes seem to change towards learning languages, particularly the
English language and school in general. Teachers should take part in motivating and capturing
adolescent learners‟ interest in order to better perform pedagogically and behaviorally.
The current study aims at investigating the effects of adolescence related changes and
the new environment exposure, the middle school environment on adolescent pupils‟ English
learning. In this respect, the basic hypothesis adopted in this work sets out whether adolescent
pupils hold positive or negative attitudes towards English learning and school in general. In
order to put our hypothesis to the test both a questionnaire and a classroom observation were
administered to investigate their attitudes towards English learning. The analysis of the
gathered data shows that pupils as adolescent learners have a negative attitudes towards
English learning and middle school setting |
