This study aims at investigating the importance of reading for pleasure in improving the
students‟ vocabulary. First, it is hypothesized that the more students read for pleasure, the
better their vocabulary knowledge will be. To test this hypothesis and to achieve the mentioned
aim, we have used three tools of research: the first one is a questionnaire directed to eleven (11)
students of third (3rd) year in the Department of English at the University of Mentouri,
Constantine. The second tool is a test directed also to the same sample. Then, as a third means
of research, we have used another questionnaire that has been submitted to teachers; some of
them are teachers at the Department of English at the University of Constantine, while the rest
of them are teachers at the Department of English at the University of Mila. After analyzing the
data obtained from the research tools, it has been confirmed that the more students read for
pleasure, the better their vocabulary will be. It is confirmed that reading for pleasure has a
considerable importance in promoting foreign language students‟ vocabulary |
