Résumé : |
The present research work is an endeavor to gain an understanding of the students‟ employed strategies to cope with unfamiliar words while reading. It further investigates whether making use of guessing from context strategy to compensate for unknown words contributes to successful comprehension achievement. Encountering unfamiliar words is likely to impede reading comprehension especially if the words are crucial for coping with the text meaning. Thus, to overcome the vocabulary problem, the guessing from context strategy seems to be an effective word attack to be employed. The present research is carried out through a questionnaire designed to test our hypothesis. Through a questionnaire administered to 25 third year English students studying Language Sciences option at the department of foreign languages, University Mentouri Constantine, our aim was to know if students make use of contextual clues to guess the meaning of new words and its effect on facilitating comprehension. The results show that guessing from context is the most important and frequently used strategy since words are better recognized if taken in context, and it does contribute to making comprehension attainable. In relation to the other strategies, consulting a dictionary tends to interrupt thinking, and slows down reading while skipping is not always useful due to its impact on comprehension. The obtained results are useful since they elicit views concerning the significance of using contextual clues as a remedy to vocabulary problems. Most importantly, they contribute in confirming the idea that guessing from context strategy remains an effective way to tackle the new vocabulary items since context provides useful information |
