Résumé : |
The present research is an attempt to investigate learners‟ of English problems in translating news headlines. English news headlines, described to be one of the evils produced by the passion for compression of nowadays media, leave learners with the question of how to translate their ungrammaticality, unfamiliar vocabulary, and most importantly style. Through a questionnaire and a translation test of both English and Arabic headlines, this research aims at investigating translation problems and difficulties faced by students in translating headlines and their strategies to solve these problems. In addition to that, it pays attention in particular to the stylistic errors made by students. The results of this study show that students faced mainly vocabulary problems when translating from English into Arabic. Their unawareness of the stylistic feature of English headlines, on the other hand, resulted in stylistically awkward English headlines when translating from Arabic into English, in addition to the regularly vocabulary problems. Strategically speaking, overlooking whole sentences (if possibly named), is the technique used by students to avoid translation problems. |
