This dissertation aims to provide a detailed account of the Muckraking movement in
the early of the twentieth century American journalism and its contribution to progressive
reforms. During the Gilded Age, the United States underwent enormous industrial and
economic changes. It was an era in which America appeared great on the outside, when in
reality the country was internally struggling to deal with the growing problems caused by
industrialization and urbanization. The growth of these serious problems pushed a group of
journalist known as Muckrakers to appear on the American scene to boost democracy and to
narrow the gap between the poor and the rich using the press as means to turn public opinion
against corruption. They racked up and exposed the muck and the filth of their country .In
response to their critical writings the progressive period emerged to bring the necessary
reforms tried to make the United States the best it can be. |
