Résumé : |
Self-esteem is one of the most important personality factors that bear upon foreign
language learners' oral performance in the language classroom. Through this study,
we seek to investigate and analyze the relationship between EFL learners' self-esteem
and their oral performance in the oral expression classes. The main aim is to attract
the teachers' and the learners' attention to the importance of positively valuing
themselves and their capacities, to be successful speakers of the foreign language. We
hypothesize that learners with high level of self-esteem will achieve better outcomes
and better grades; whereas, learners with low self esteem will have lower grades. In
the pursuit of our aim and in order for us to test the hypothesis, we have carried out an
investigation through a student self-completion questionnaire, which is administered
to one group of third year EFL learners. After having completed the questionnaire, we
divided them into two sub-groups; one is the good-mark group and the other one is
the low-mark group. The results obtained from the analysis of both questionnaires
(i.e. the low-mark group and the good-mark group) show that there is a positive
relationship between the students' self-esteem and their foreign language oral
performance in the classroom, and that this relationship affects directly their level of
academic achievement |
