Résumé : |
The primary element in learning a foreign language is learning its vocabulary. There are
many factors which affect students’ vocabulary development; among these factors,
motivation on students’ vocabulary development. The educational setting in which this
study takes place is the department of Letters and the English Language, Faculty of letters
and languages at Mentouri Brothers University, Constantine. The present study is
undertaken in order to investigate the impact of motivation on developing students’
vocabulary. Furthermore, it attempts to redirect teachers’ attention to the crucial role that
motivation plays in the learning and teaching process in general and in developing
vocabulary in particular. In order to check this correlation, we have hypothesized that if
students are motivated, they would learn a significant amount of new words successfully.
To test the hypothesis, we have administered two main questionnaires: a teachers’
questionnaire for 14 written expression teachers and a students’ questionnaire 28 students.
The discussion of the obtained results confirmed the hypothesis and has showed that
motivation has a positive effect on students’ vocabulary development. We can say that the
teachers and the students show a total agreement with what we have assumed in this study.
Moreover, the results of the two questionnaires affirm that there is some sort of correlation
between motivation and vocabulary learning. |
